University of St. Andrews Eden Campus

Local Energy Investment Optioneering

University of St. Andrews Eden Campus

University of St. Andrews is exapnding – its Eden Campus will be a low carbon exemplar and is central to the University's strategic drive to become a carbon neutral university by 2035

The University of St. Andrews is developing the 14-hectare brown-field site that once housed the Eden Paper Mill. The new site is to feature a range of building types from offices to research labs.

Their challenge is to deliver innovative new facilities cost-effectively, while supporting the local St. Andrews community, and their own decarbonisation objectives, through investment in an appropriate portfolio of clean energy technologies.

Benefits Delivered

  • Forward Property and Energy Modelling:ENQUIP collected and enhanced Eden Campus's energy consumption, spatial, and billing data to model future energy demand and operating costs as the development evolves.
  • Grid Constraint Optimisation:ENQUIP evaluated alternative energy and transport investment scenarios, accounting for grid connection constraints and planned network upgrades to maximise long-term value.
  • Alternative Investment Pathways:ENQUIP developed and compared alternative clean energy investment pathways for Eden Campus, assessing their impact on site economics, carbon performance, and long-term return on investment.

This project will enable us for the first time to explore a path of least-regret as we develop the Eden Campus site, and to discover how it can support a sustainable energy future for St. Andrews.
